These beautifully restored buildings were designed by Captain Bertie Hubbard MacLaren (the Superintendent of Parks at the time) and built in the 1920s. Originally used as shelters, the Pavilions have seen many uses over the years and now are for all the community to use. The Pavilions were just a small part of the design as Bertie was responsible for the whole park 20's park make over including the south end as a playground and boating pond with surrounding columns and pergolas. His designs were illustrated in his plans [PDF 2.28mb] and described in his journals [PDF 7.01mb].

One of the two restored pavilions at the park (the one on the Ditchling Road) side has been named the MacLaren in Bertie's honour and the east side now named as Elm.

If you would like to to hire the MacLaren Pavilion or the smaller Elm room opposite, please contact park.pavilions@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call 01273 292704.
